Supporting construction staff in the transition to low-carbon concrete: role of the concrete expert

“In the Centre-East region of France, all worksites are designed to be in low-carbon concrete, with 77% of construction by the Building Delegation and 84% by the Civil Engineering Delegation!” says Benjamin Narcy, Head of Concrete Materials, Centre-Est Civil Engineering France and Building France delegations of VINCI Construction.

EXEGY® experience

All projects being carried out by the Centre-Est delegations are designed using low-carbon concrete

As Head of Concrete Design for the past 17 years, my role encompasses all the phases of our civil engineering and building projects in the Centre-East region: from design to construction to post-construction monitoring.

During the price study phase, I analyse the technical specifications for the structural works. I look at offers from ready-mixed concrete (RMC) suppliers able to meet our site requirements and our concrete decarbonisation targets. Before worksite operations begin, my role is to check that the concrete is consistent with the characteristics set out in the specifications. I make sure that our clients’ requirements in terms of the concrete used are feasible and comply with regulations and worksite conditions.

Throughout the construction phase, I provide technical support,
assisting, advising and educating the operational teams at the worksite. My role during the worksite phase also involves confirming the technical viability of our ready-mixed concrete partners and concrete testing laboratories, by performing audits. When the worksite is complete, I provide expert advice in case any concrete materials implemented are not compliant. Basically, my job boils down to supporting the operational teams on worksites. I respond to their concerns regarding delivery, compliance checks, formwork preparation and the use of low-carbon concrete.
The Concrete Department works closely with RMC suppliers during suitability and calibration tests, as well as with concrete inspection companies and customer inspection offices.

Technical discussions with the construction staff are really motivating. They are instrumental in developing best practices and contributing to the success of our projects.

In the transition towards VINCI’s target of using 90% low-carbon concrete at our worksites by 2030, the operational teams need support from the project study phase onwards, in synergy with staff from the Regional Technical and Operational Division (DRTO).

To successfully achieve our 2030 low-carbon concrete targets, we must also organise internal and external training sessions. I’ve built a solid relationship with operational staff and suppliers to react fast in the face of adversity.
I’m convinced that the experience of the Building France and Civil Engineering France delegations in the Centre-Est region is now broad enough to meet all our site needs and accelerate the adoption of low-carbon concrete.
