VINCI Construction is constructing 7 of the 13 buildings at Nantes University Hospital: operating theatres, imaging, emergency, critical care, laboratory and the mother-child-adolescent unit.
The new hospital on Île de Nantes is taking shape on land formerly used for the marché d’intérêt national de Nantes, a now-relocated wholesale market.
Sogea is leading the work packages in a consortium with ETPO for the technical buildings, working with subcontractor Botte Fondations, a VINCI Construction subsidiary.
All the concrete being used is low- or very low-carbon with clinker replacement levels of 50-80%.
Two types of concrete are being used – one with limestone filler and blast-furnace slag and another with limestone filler and metakaolin. The concrete is being poured in collaboration with an on-site VINCI Construction plant.
The VINCI Construction materials laboratory teams helped develop the EXEGY®L+C3 concrete solutions used for this project, conducting laboratory tests upstream as well as suitability tests on site to ensure compliance with the applicable concrete standards.
This process resulted in formulations where up to over 80% of the clinker was replaced by slag, suitable for applications such as foundation piles. In the other EXEGY®L+C3 concrete solutions, at least 50% of the clinker was replaced by limestone filler and metakaolin.
